By applying Te Ūnga Mai’s methodology and expertise in place-based and heritage education to other sites and landscapes throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand we are assisting organizations and schools to create their own innovative place-based education programmes. Through the application of this framework we are able to develop programmes and activities that explore people’s connection with place through storytelling, experiences and creativity.

This framework can be applied to any site – drawing on the geographical location, the physical and ecological environment, and the social, cultural and historical setting, to create activities and resources that relate to students immediate surroundings. These types of activities not only meet the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum – they are highly engaging, meaningful and directly related to the student’s and their community.

We are applying this methodology to significant heritage landscapes and other locations nationwide, assisting schools, heritage organizations and education providers to add value to their programmes by incorporating a place-conscious approach.

Te Putake is a place-based experiential education programme exploring the history and landscape of Turanganui a Kiwa/Gisborne and the Tairawhiti/East Coast through fun outdoor and interactive activities. Launched in June 2009 Te Putake utilizes Te Unga Mai’s unique approach to place-based education to create exciting, innovative learning opportunities.

The activities and themes explored open student’s minds to the concept of different worldviews, and the complexities of early encounters between Maori and Europeans. Participants learn how significant historical events have impacted on their own heritage and community and how our shared cultural heritage has left its mark on the landscape of this place.

Te Putake also provides unique social experiences for students, outside the norms and routines of day to day school life. With a strong focus on teambuilding, cooperations and small group activity they are able to immerse themselves in activities that promote fun cooperative learning.
